OSTEND – Three museums in Ostend will merge to form a new museum, announced the newly founded Museum council.

The new museum will be called “Kunstmuseum aan Zee”, or Art Museum by the Sea will consist of PMMK, the Museum for Modern Art and MSK, the Museum of Fine Arts.

The two museums earlier announced their intention to co-operate. At present, the Fine Arts Museum is homeless, due to the fact that it’s original location, the Ostend Feest-and Cultuurpaleis, has been turned into a shopping mall.

The municipal collection which houses works by Ensor and Spilliaert will now receive a new home and move to the Art Museum by the Sea, on the premises of the current PMMK.

In aim to steer the whole in the right direction, West Flanders provincial council and the city of Ostend have established a museum council. The way in which that happened, caused a few raised eyebrows. Others weren’t too happy with the new name.

But provincial councillor Gunther Pertry doesn’t agree with the defeatists. He’s convinced the collaboration will result in a unique museum that houses a vast collection of modern art as well as a wide array of paintings by the renowned local painter James Ensor.
