Four people are in detention following raids across the country. Belgium's federal public prosecutor says that twenty-two premises were raided as part of an operation against terrorism.

House searches were carried out in Maasmechelen (2), Maaseik (11), Kinrooi (1), Genk (1) and Houthalen-Helchteren (2) in Limburg Province, in Antwerp (4) and in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek in Brussels (1).

Police did not find any arms, explosives or ammunition.

A number of documents and computers were seized and are now being examined. Four people have been detained and will appear before a judge in the course of the day.

The raids were carried out as part of an investigation centring on people from Belgium with plans to travel to Syria probably aiming to join a terrorist organisation.

The organisation is also suspected of helping returning jihadi fighters.

The raids were carried out as part of an investigation centring on people from Belgium with plans to travel to Syria probably aiming to join a terrorist organisation.

Belgian prosecutors want to expose the working of the organisation that recruits Belgians to become jihadi fighters in Syria.

They have stressed today's operation is not linked to the recent terrorist outrages in Verviers and Paris.
