ANTWERP – The extreme right wing group Blood & Honour has "declared war" on all homosexual men and lesbians who will be heading to Antwerp in the coming days for the European Gay and Lesbian Sport Championships (Eurogames). "It is our sacred duty to take action," says Olivier Bronselaer, fanatic Hitler devotee and anti-gay activist.

"This is a heartfelt call to all national socialists throughout Europe to come to Antwerp, Belgium from 12 to 15 July," is the opening sentence of the appeal, which has been posted on the Flemish webforum of neo-Nazi group Blood & Honour since Wednesday evening. "I ask you loud and clear to protest against this Olympic Games for gays and lesbians. First visit the website of this terrible event. It is your sacred duty to take action and even call for organised demonstrations."

Eurogames 2007 organisers did not want to discuss the threats. "No comment," says spokesperson Davy Brocatus. "We have informed everyone. Both our security team and the police are aware of the situation. We don't want to devote any more attention to it."

The police are concerned. "We are not quite on high alert yet," says Sven Lommaert of the Antwerp police. "But we will take appropriate action." Lommaert did not want to say on Thursday what concrete measures this would entail.

More than 3,500 sportsmen and women are expected at the 11th edition of the Eurogames in the coming days. More than 10,000 spectators are expected from 48 countries. The event was officially opened on Thursday night with a parade of athletes and a performance of the event's official song by Kate Ryan.
