BRUSSELS — Belgian rail NMBS-SNCB will start a mass media campaign mid-September to recruit 1,500 new employees.
The rail authority is primarily looking for young employees, newspaper 'De Standaard' reported on Thursday.
It is looking for train drivers, conductors, technicians and engineers. These types of technical jobs have been classified as chronic vacancies for several years.
On 1 June, the NMBS-SNCB had already recruited 502 workers, but is aiming to recruit a total of 1,500 employees by the end of the year.
On 16 September, the national Train-Tram-Bus Day, the rail authority will launch a massive media campaign to recruit staff.
Advertisements will be placed in newspapers, recruiting drives will be held in stations, radio commercials will be broadcast and internet advertisements will appear.
The NMBS-SNCB has on average 37,000 workers, but more than 1,500 leave every year because they reach their pension age.
In the coming 10 years, 40 percent of the rail authority's staff will leave the company.
