BRUSSELS - A Belgian mother has admitted to killing her two and a half year old daughter and throwing her body in a nearby canal, it was reported on Friday.
The woman, Lochtenberg Bosmans, confessed on Friday to killing her daughter Jansien, said the Antwerp public prosecutor.
The horrific story unfolded on Thursday when the child's body was discovered in a bag floating in a canal near her home.
At first Bosmans, who is believed to be suffering from depression, alerted police herself to her daughter's disappearance.
On Wednesday she told police officers that Jansien had gone missing when she had gone out to feed chickens at the bottom of the garden.
Child Focus in Brussels was immediately alerted and the first 'missing' posters were distributed without delay.
Meanwhile, police officers and fire-fighters scoured the area with dogs and sonar equipment.
Police divers searched the canal, which was only 100 metres away from the family home in Sint-Job-in-t-Goor.
A little boot was found but the Bosmans claimed not to recognise it as her child's.
The search resumed on Thursday at dawn, but the grim discovery was made later in the afternoon by two women walking their dogs by the canal.
The toddler's cause of death remains unknown but she is believed to have drowned after being strangled and presumed dead.
