BRUSSELS – A 6-year-old Moroccan boy has been living in the Antwerp University Hospital for the past 2.5 years against his will. The boy was brought to the hospital by his grandmother because of a serious intestinal problem.

The grandmother has since disappeared without trace. The boy's parents had disowned him in Morocco because of his illness. The Flemish newspaper Het Laatste nieuws reported on the story on Tuesday.

The boy Salmane has undergone frequent operations and his medical costs have now exceeded EUR 600,000.

The hospital is looking for a foster home for the boy. A Moroccan employee of the hospital has already volunteered to take him in.
