More delays on the railways
New punctuality figures on the railways show worst results in ten years.
New punctuality figures on the railways show worst results in ten years. Only 89.2% of services reached their destination with less than 5 minutes delay.
The figures come from Infrabel, the company that runs Belgium's rail infrastructure.
The rail operator NMBS says it knows the reasons: most delays are caused by problems with equipment.
In comparison with 2006 there has been an improvement, but it does remain the main cause of delays.
Some delays are exacerbated because large numbers of passengers are obliged to change platform.
Then there are also reasons beyond the control of the rail companies: strikes and thefts of copper lines.
Minister for Publicly Owned Businesses Inge Vervotte (Flemish Christian democrat) is not satisfied with this explanation and she intends to take the matter up in talks on the rail company's new contract.
The number of trains that were cancelled last year doubled.
This news is not contained in the new punctuality figures.
