BRUSSELS – The Name Changing Service received 1,347 applications from people wishing to change their name last year. 608 of these applications were from people wishing to change their surname. 118 Belgians wanted to change both their first and last names.

The figures show an increase from 2005 when 1,242 applications were filed, according to the annual report from the federal justice ministry. How many of these applications actually led to name changes was not reported.

In 2001 the process of changing one's surname took on average two years. That waiting time was about one year for people wishing to change their first name. These periods have in the meantime been reduced to an average of 18 months for a surname change and six to nine months for a change of first name.

Forty people applied for a new first name in 2005 because they had undergone a sex change. 33 of these requests were granted.
