BELGIUM - An increased number of Flemish tourists had to be repatriated after an accident between 1 July and 15 August, according to figures by the travel insurance department of the Flemish Motorists' Association VAB.

During these six weeks, the number of repatriations for medical reasons saw a 24 percent rise. The heat is thought to be the main contributory factor.

The increase was especially pronounced in Turkey, with five times as many Flemish tourists returning home.

Tourists opting for an active holiday are most at risk as more injuries involve bicycle and motorbike accidents.
