More Belgians abroad for this Easter holiday
Poor weather has driven families to spend their annual Easter holiday abroad.7 April 2008
BELGIUM - The poor weather for the past two weeks of Easter holiday has meant that more families than ever chose to spend their Easter holiday abroad.
The tourist offices on the Flemish Coast report only “moderate” levels of business, while Easter is usually a busy time for the hospitality industry in Belgian coastal resorts.
The Belgian motoring association, Touring, reports an almost 20 percent increase in the number of calls for assistance it received from its members on holiday abroad.
More Belgians left the country in search of sun or snow. Touring received from Belgians holidaying in exotic locations such as Egypt, Thailand and Guadeloupe.
Nevertheless, most calls from Belgians requiring help come from those having broken limbs in skiing accidents.
Touring also received its fair share of calls from members whose cars had broken down on the way to or from the Alpine ski resorts.
Meanwhile, Europ Assistance says that it helped 10 percent more families this year than during the Easter period in 2007.
