BRUSSELS -  Several kilometres of the Meus river in Hoei are polluted with hydrocarbons. The pollution was discovered in the early hours on Tuesday, according to the fire brigade in Hoei. The fire brigade has been on site since Tuesday morning.

Shortly after midnight the hydrocarbon contamination was discovered in the Meus near the campground of Bas-Oha. At the end of the morning on Tuesday the contamination spread to near the nuclear power plant in Tihange.

The fire brigade and civil guard considered erecting a floating barrier just before the La Neuville dam.

It is still unclear where the pollution is coming from, said a fireman on the scene. The hydrocarbons could have come from the degassing of a ship or the deliberate dumping of waste oil.

Since the contaminants remain on the surface of the water it does not pose any danger to the underwater fauna.
