7 January 2004, BRUSSELS – Antwerp University announced Wednesday it would be according an honorary doctorate degree to former South African President Nelson Mandela.

BRUSSELS – Antwerp University announced Wednesday it would be according an honorary doctorate degree to former South African President Nelson Mandela.

The ceremony is due to occur on 28 May and which Mandela says he will attend if he is fit to travel.

Mandela is being honoured by Antwerp University for his peace efforts, he has already received honorary degrees from the Brussels VUB and ULB universities, as well as the University of Liege.

Flemish authorities and the Antwerp Chamber of Commerce will be using the event as an opportunity to launch a South African aid project, in cooperation with the university.

Honorary doctorate degrees will also be handed out on the day to Dutch psychiatrist Herman van Praag from Maastricht University, British economists Tony Atkinson (Oxford) and David Newberry (Cambridge), and British chemist Amyand Buckingham (Cambridge).
