A man in his sixties was crushed to death by an uprooted tree on Sunday as storm winds spread across Belgium from southwest Europe, the fire service said.

BRUSSELS. The fatal accident occurred in Jodoigne, some 40 kilometres (25 miles) from Brussels, as rain and high winds brought down powerlines, lifted trees, damaged cars and broke windows in many parts of the country.

Public parks were closed in the capital Brussels, as were roads through woodlands, for fear of falling trees.
