MONTREAL - A 31-year-old Belgian man from Liège in Wallonia has been detained in Montreal in Canada for inviting a 13-year-old girl to his hotel room.
The man and the girl met via the Internet. They regularly chatted and sent each other hundreds of emails in which they did not lie about their identity.
On Friday, the Francophone Belgian travelled to Montreal to meet the girl. He took her to his hotel.
The girl's parents alerted the police when they discovered her chat files on her computer. The police searched all hotels in the city until they found the man.
The girl has now been taken to a hospital where it will be established if she has had sex with the man.
House searches have been carried out at the suspect’s home in Liège and his parents' home near Waremme in Wallonia.
The Belgian police have seized evidence that leaves them in no doubt about the suspect’s intentions. His conversations with the Canadian girl were sexually explicit. He had intended to take the girl to the US.
The Belgian will appear before Canadian magistrates on Monday.
