BRUSSELS — A man who allegedly beat his housemate to death on Saturday night in Vorst was trying to perform an exorcism and had not intended to kill the victim, the Brussels public prosecution office said on Monday.

The 21-year-old suspect was arrested on charges of intentional assault that unintentionally led to the victim's death, news agency Belga reported.

The man had only been living with the 44-year-old victim for a couple of days, having moved into the victim's Vorst apartment.

But on Saturday night, the suspect allegedly tied his housemate up and beat him with a
broomstick, claiming he tried to drive the devil out of the victim's body.

The older man died as a result of the beating.

The suspect then alerted emergency services, which could only pronounce the man's death. The suspect was remanded in custody on Sunday night.
