BELGIUM – Investigations have shown that a driver’s negligence is the cause of one of the accidents that took place on the E17 motorway on Thursday morning.

On Thursday, two accidents took place on the E17 motorway: One in Deinze and one in Nazareth in the direction of Antwerp, leaving one person killed and the other one seriously injured.

The first accident took place at about 6:30am.  It involved 4 lorries and a van. The van was crushed between the lorries, killing the driver, and seriously injuring another person.

The second accident involved two lorries and saw one person stuck in the wreckage. The person was freed by emergency service and taken to hospital.

Traffic was led away from the motorway on alternative routes while the wreckage was cleared.

One lorry driver involved in the first accident was taken in for questioning. The man, a Polish lorry driver, ploughed into slow-going traffic in a construction zone on the motorway.  He has been accused of negligence and his drivers' license has been revoked.

The E17 was blocked all morning.  It was cleared by the afternoon.
