BRUSSELS — The Brussels public prosecution office has arrested a 56-year-old man on allegations he rented out poor quality accommodation for exorbitant rent.

The man owns 12 properties in the Belgian capital, usually renting them out to illegal immigrants.

It is estimated that he earns EUR 45,000 per month in rent.

But police raided three properties on Tuesday and discovered 38 of the 72 residents were illegal immigrants.

One of the properties was located in the Antoine Dansaertstraat in the city centre.

Some 33 illegal immigrants were handed over to the immigration service DVZ-OE.

Brussels police spokesman Christian De Coninck said the tenants were living in degrading conditions.

Some tenants were paying EUR 700 a month for one room. They also had to share a bathroom and kitchen with other tenants.
