ANTWERP – The Flanders region Education Minister Marleen Vanderpoorten has announced plans to make job experience for secondary school students part of the statutory curriculum.

Vanderpoorten said an internships within a firm or organisation was necessary to revive sorely-lacking creativity and entrepreneurial skills in Flanders where she accused schools of not doing enough to motivate children for future professional activities.

The minister's proposals met with immediate approval from the Belgian employers'  association VBO and the Flanders region opposition christian democrat CD&V party.

The VBO cautioned however that the costs incurred by companies taking part in the internships needed to be closely assessed.
