Rome -- Italian police said Thursday they had found a German couple who abandoned three young children at a restaurant at the weekend, not far from where they went missing.

The mother, Caterina Remhof, 26, and her partner, Sascha Schmidt, 24, walked out of the restaurant after ordering a pizza for the children in the northern town of Aosta on Sunday, according to police.

The couple left their car in front of the restaurant with their identity papers inside.

Police stepped up patrols at Italy's borders, ports, train stations and airports, and broadcast their picture. But they were finally found in woods outside Aosta Thursday.

The couple were traced after a woman who had seen their photo in the newspapers recognised the couple, the ANSA news agency reported.

German police said that Schmidt was on the run after not returning to prison while on parole.

Prosecutors said he had been jailed for crimes including blackmail and that his sentence had been due to end in mid-2011.

Remhof's children, born from a previous relationship, were placed in the care of social services. One of them is just a few months old.
