BRUSSELS - The number of rape cases reported to the courts in Belgium rises every year. The number increased from 3,095 in 2003 to 3,441 in 2004, and to 3,458 in 2005.

Summons had been issued or prosecution started in 1,135 of these 9,994 cases by 10 January 2006.

This emerged from Justice Minister Laurette Onkelinx's answer on Thursday to written questions from Senator Stephanie Anseeuw (VLD).

Some 22.48 percent of the rape cases reported in the 2003-2005 period were in the jurisdiction of the court in Ghent, 22.31 percent in Antwerp, 21.85 percent in Lieges, 19.32 percent in Brussels and 14.1 percent in Bergen. Bergen was the only jurisdiction to see a decrease in the number of cases, from 451 to 411.
