Increase in number of car poolers in Belgium
Car pool organisers in Belgium report a general increase in new members.

BELGIUM – The number of car poolers has increased fourfold in 2008 as compared to the same period last year, said car pool organiser Taxistop.
According to the organisation, May and June saw a considerable increase in the number of queries and new members. Instead of the traditional summer low, business is booming, the organisation says.
“On average, we’ve noticed an increase of 300 to 400 percent per month, that’s about four times more than in 2007,” David Van Kesteren of Taxistop says.
According to Van Kesteren, the increase is not entirely related to the high petrol prices.
“Taxistop has recently launched a new website which makes car pooling a lot easier and that has had an important effect too,” Van Kesteren believes.
Cambio, which organises car-sharing in major cities, has also noticed an increase in business in recent months.
At the end of July, the organisation counted 5,889 customers, a 40 percent increase from last year. Cambio is especially successful in Brussels, where most of its customers live.
