Increase in gang rapes

10 April 2007, BRUSSELS – The number of convictions for gang rape increased from 14 to 33 a year in the 2000-2004 period. There had also been an increase from 17 to 32 in the time between 1995 and 1999. These convictions were for rape with the aggravating factor that those involved were helped by one or more others, Justice Minister Onkelinx wrote in answer to questions from Patrick Cocriamont (far-right Front Nationale FN).

BRUSSELS – The number of convictions for gang rape increased from 14 to 33 a year in the 2000-2004 period. There had also been an increase from 17 to 32 in the time between 1995 and 1999. These convictions were for rape with the aggravating factor that those involved were helped by one or more others, Justice Minister Onkelinx wrote in answer to questions from Patrick Cocriamont (far-right Front Nationale FN).

The number of convictions for the rape of minors also increased, from 278 in 2000 to 335 in 2003. In 193 of these cases in 2003 the victim was between the ages of 10 and 14, in 117 cases under 10.
 
Between 20 and 50 perpetrators were put behind bars each year between 1995 and 2003.
