BRUSSELS – Non-European immigrants living in Belgium will in future be permitted to hold posts in the Flemish civil service on contracts of unlimited duration.

The Flemish government has proposed to offer immigrants outside of the European Union a so-called ‘job for life’ at regional and provincial level in administration welfare services.

The new regulations came about on the initiative of Flemish Interior Minister Paul Van Grembergen. Currently, the Belgian Constitution states that only Belgian citizens are permitted to hold jobs in the civil service.

The Council of State had no objections to the proposal as it will mean the government will be complying with an international treaty on labour. The proposal still needs to be endorsed by the Flemish parliament.
