Hunger striker in Brussels hospitalised
A member of the group of illegal immigrants staging a hunger strike in the car park at Brussels Free University has been hospitalised.
The 19-year-old has been fasting for the past 57 days and was rushed to the intensive care unit of a Brussels hospital on Monday.
Around one hundred illegal immigrants have been staging a hunger strike in the car park of Brussels Dutch-language Free University.
They hope to put pressure on the authorities to grant them papers allowing them to remain in Belgium.
The university has asked the hunger strikers to end their protest several times and to vacate the car park.
However, this request has fallen on deaf ears.
Last week, doctors and supporters of the hunger strikers warned that they could risk permanently damaging their heath if their protest continued.
Meanwhile, some of the hunger strikers are reported to already be in very poor health.
