BRUSSELS - A huge fire swept through a major out-of-town shopping complex near Antwerp on Wednesday, destroying at least four shops and seriously damaging a fifth, the emergency services have confirmed.

Firemen brought the blaze under control shortly after mid-day and no one was injured.

But the fire, which led the emergency services to launch a 'phase one' disaster response plan, caused damage that analysts say could run into millions of euros.

At the height of the blaze, the emergency services were forced to close the main A12 road between Antwerp and Brussels as well as two road tunnels, causing major tailbacks during the morning rush hour.

The roads have since been re-opened.

It is not clear what caused the fire.
