BRUSSELS — The winter sales period in Belgium officially started on Tuesday as clothing retailers promised shoppers exceptionally large discounts.
Many shops opened their doors much earlier than usual, but due to the winter cold, shoppers only gathered en masse later in the day.
Bigger crowds were seen starting to gather early afternoon and the streets were only expected to get more crowded as the day progressed.
It is being speculated that a large number of people have not yet bought their winter clothing because warm weather extended deep into the autumn months.
There are therefore a higher number of winter jumpers and jackets in stock than usual, newspaper 'De Standaard' reported.
"We had a good December, but the months before that were exceptionally warm," a spokesman for small business association Unizo, Luc Ardies, said.
"The typical winter clothing remained hanging [in stores] and the consumer can now profit from that."
The retail sector has estimated that the average discount will be 40 percent, but discounts can amount to 70 and even 80 percent.
Especially winter clothing such as scarves and gloves are being sold quickly. The better known brands are performing best.
