‘Helicopter’ fugitives arranged escape via mobile phone

Ashraf Sekkaki and his accomplices orchestrated their escape from prison in Bruges with the help of a mobile phone that they had procured, revealed Het Laatste Nieuws.

Some years ago there was a pilot project to make any phone traffic inside prisons impossible, but this idea was abandoned. There is currently another project being tested, reported the VRT.

“When the pilot project ended, it was clear to us that it was not technically feasible. There were still problems. The costs of maintaining such a system were also very high”, explained Laurent Sempot, spokesperson for the Belgian prison service.

“For the last four months we have been testing a different project in other prisons”, added Mr. Sempot. “The results have been very good”.
