BRUSSELS — Alarmed by figures indicating 50 percent of all road deaths take place on the weekend, Transport Minister Renaat Landuyt wants to educate motorists about safer driving over the weekend.

Weekend accidents are usually more serious than those that take place during the week, the Traffic Barometer indicated.

Some 39 people were killed in traffic accidents on the weekends in April. That was 50.6 percent of the total number of traffic fatalities in April.

Not only more accidents occur between Friday night and Monday morning, they also claim more lives, news agency Belga reported.

"I then ask for extra caution during the weekend," Renaat said. "Motorists apparently don't pay close attention to safety during the weekend."

"You can consider the holiday period as one lone weekend and it is therefore possibly just as dangerous."

But Renaat was not only issuing safety message to youth: "They don't cause the lack of safety in weekend traffic alone."

There is also good news: the number of weekend traffic deaths has declined from three to two per day since the coalition government took office in 2004.

"That is a poor consolation for those who lose a loved one on the road," Landuyt said.
