BRUSSELS — The inner Cabinet reached agreement at about 2.30am on Thursday over its budgetary re-assessment, ensuring a balanced 2006 Budget.
The public will not feel the impact of any measures, but the Defence Ministry has agreed to a EUR 20 million funding cut.
And intensified efforts against tax and social security fraud are expected to yield the government several hundred million euros.
The cabinet also decided that 'services cheques' — official payment slips used by households to pay cleaners or home care help to prevent illegal work — will not be scrapped nor become more expensive.
The government also brokered a deal on Wednesday night in which Belgian oil companies will contribute to the energy rebate by depositing EUR 12 million into a fund for renewable energy.
The oil sector was initially asked to pay EUR 100 million to fund a discount on the price of heating oil, but this figure was later reduced to EUR 60 million.
However, oil companies refused to pay for the rebate and eventually agreed to the EUR 12 million contribution.
