BELGIUM – The 16th Ghent Festival which ended Tuesday attracted over 1.5 million visitors, say Lieven Decaluwé, the feestenburgemeester (festival mayor) of Ghent.

Some say that the festival saw fewer visitors than previous years.

Steven De Smet of the Ghent police confirms: "The general feeling is that we had fewer visitors than the past years."

"This was not a bad thing: the absence of huge crowds made the festival area a more pleasant place to stay."

Despite the hundreds of thousands of visitors, the festival only saw two major incidents.

Last week, a hamburger stall exploded at the heart of the festival and a Dutch young man sustained severe injuries when he hit his head jumping into the water. The two victims of the explosion sustained burns, but they have now returned home from hospital.

At 10 am Tuesday morning, the festival was officially closed at the Vlasmarkt.
