BRUSSELS — Fugitive gangster Kaplan Murat is sought as a witness in investigations into the infamous Gang of Nijvel, a police wanted notice has indicated.
It is considered possible that Murat, 44, stole cars in the 1980s that were later used by the Gang of Nijvel without his knowledge, newspaper 'De Standaard' reported on Thursday.
The convicted robber has been on the run from police for more than 10 days, after failing to return from penitentiary leave on 16 July.
On 17 July, police cornered Murat at a Brico store in Wavre, but he managed to elude police and disappeared without trace.
Investigations have now discovered that Murat's earlier stolen cars could have been used later by the Gang of Nijvel in its bloody robberies between 1982-85.
Police suspect a car stolen by Murat was driven to Ohain by the culprits of a robbery-murder at the restaurant Les Trois Canards on 2 October 1983.
Restaurant manager Jacques Van Camp was tortured and shot in the neck during the robbery.
Police also think it's possible that Murat stole a car from a Ukkel/Uccle garage that had been taken in for repairs for gun shot damage.
That car could also have been used by the gang.
