BRUSSELS – By 2006, a visit to your local surgery will cost EUR 20, while a home visit will reach EUR 30 in a bid to increase GPs' pay packets.
Following an agreement between GP representatives and health insurance companies, patients will pay an extra EUR 2 for consultations and EUR 5 for home visits.
In return, doctors will be making efforts to prescribe fewer and less expensive drugs, as well as cut down the number of tests they prescribe.
The Ministry for Health has asked for a noticeable break by next Octoer in the trend of medical over-consumption.
But GPs have refused to be pinned down to a set amount of money to be saved.
The pharmaceutical industry has reacted negatively to the prescription curb, saying the move could reduce its research capacity.
