Two young Frenchmen rushed to a Belgian hospital after an accident on a freeway snatched the receptionist's hand-bag and then made off in an ambulance, judicial officials said Thursday.

Belgian prosecutors said the two men in their 30s were taken to a hospital in Saint-Nicolas, in the Antwerp region, after being slightly hurt in an accident on the Ghent to Antwerp motorway.

After stealing the bag "they climbed into an ambulance and fled", a spokesman for the prosecutor's office said.

They were detained not long later, he added.
