BRUSSELS — A promotional offer at a Shell petrol station at the Heizel in Brussels led to chaos on Wednesday morning.
Shell was offering motorists free petrol or diesel to promote its new network of unstaffed service stations.
Motorists were able to fill their cars up for free between 11am and midday.
But police found it difficult to cope with the amount of traffic around the Heizel service station.
Dozens of motorists waited several hours in the queue to fill up their cars.
The promotional offer by Shell was designed to highlight lower prices at unstaffed stations.
The oil company is launching similar promotions across Belgium in the next few days.
