Former VRT journalist murdered in Iraq

BAGDAD -- A former journalist of Radio Vlaanderen Internationaal (The VRT world service) was killed in the centre of Bagdad.

Kamel Shiyah Abdullah, 57 years old, is of Belgian nationality. A member of the Iraqi communist party, he was given refugee status in Belgium in the 1980s.

Abdullah worked for the Arabic broadcasts of Radio Vlaanderen Internationaal (The VRT world service) for several years.

He returned to his country in 2003, following the fall of the regime of Saddam Hussein, to work as advisor to the minister of culture.

The Iraqi civil servant was murdered in his car in the centre of Bagdad on Saturday. Someone put a gun to his head and killed him, using a silencer. His driver was seriously injured.
