Mpenza retires for medical reasons.

BRUSSELS - Former Belgian international Mbo Mpenza announced his retirement with immediate effect from football because of a recurring back injury.

The 32-year-old, scorer of three goals in 56 internationals, had been under contract with Greek side Larissa having signed a two-year contract for them in the summer.

"After consulting with both Greek and Belgian doctors, Mbo Mpenza has no option but to retire immediately from football," read a statement.

Mpenza, older brother of fellow Belgian international Emile Mpenza, had spells with Belgian sides Courtrai, Mouscron, Standard Liege and Anderlecht.

He also played for Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon and Turkish giants Galatasaray.
