BRUSSELS — A Flemish girl committed suicide four years ago after she was abused by her neighbour, the uncle of 'Desperate Housewives' star Teri Hatcher, it has been revealed.

Sarah Van Cleemput, of Sint-Gillis-Waas, moved as a child with her parents to Sunnyvale in California, commercial broadcaster VTM reported.

It was there where she was abused by her neighbour, Richard Hayes, now 64.

The girl never spoke with anyone about the abuse and eventually committed suicide in 2002 at the age of 14. She shot herself in the head.

Her parents then buried her in Sint-Gillis-Waas and returned to the US.

Sarah wrote about the sexual abuse in her farewell letters and police arrested Hayes.

When Hatcher heard the news in 2002, she told police she was also abused by Hayes, her uncle, when she was seven years old.

Hatcher had never spoken about the abuse until she heard her uncle had been arrested. Her testimony contributed to Hayes being sentenced to a 14-year jail term.

She has since told magazine 'Vanity Fair' about the abuse, making it public knowledge this week.
