BRUSSELS – Emissions of harmful gasses have dropped over the past ten years in Flanders, in some cases by 50 percent, according to figures released by the Flemish Environment Agency.

The emission of gases responsible for acid rain has decreased by more than 40 percent since 1990, while emissions of ozone-damaging gases has been reduced by half.

The results are mainly thanks to efforts by the industrial and agricultural sectors.

On the flip side however, it is thought that Belgium as a whole will never come in line with Kyoto norms on greenhouse gases due to pollution caused by heavy traffic.
