GHENT - A generalised trend of poor diets and missed meals is threatening the health of children in the Flanders region, according to a survey by the University of Ghent.

Researchers studied the eating habits of 1,800 children in the region, and found that they were missing the recommended intake of vegetables, fruit and fish in a diet dominated by sugar-rich drinks and sweet dishes.

One in every five of the children surveyed were found to skip breakfast.

Local authorities are now planning to target parents with a campaign of information on nutrition and advice on ensuring that children follow a proper diet.
