Yachtswoman Evi Van Acker 26 has been awarded the Vlaamse Sportjuweel 2011 Flemish Sports Jewel, a Flemish Community Award that honours a Flemish sporting star who achieved considerable success or ended an illustrious career during the course of the year. This honour, which is only bestowed once within a career span, was bestowed upon Van Acker for her shining achievements during the past year. She hardly ever missed a top three position when competing in the Laser Radial class during international regattas, and secured  a second position in the World Cup. In the Finnish capital of Helsinki she won the European Championship for the third time in her career. During the World Championship in Fremantle, Australia she obtained silver. Meanwhile she has secured a place for herself in next year’s Olympic Games in London, where she hopes to improve on her eighth position achieved in Peking in 2008. On Sunday evening Van Acker also achieved a second place in the ‘Sportswoman of the Year’ award after Kim Clijsters.
