BRUSSELS — Flemish Premier Yves Leterme has badly strained his ankle and will spend the coming period on crutches.
The Christian Democrat CD&V premier tripped and fell as he descended from a rostrum after giving a speech on Tuesday over food safety in the Antwerp provincial government building.
"I have badly sprained my ankle," Leterme confirmed to broadcaster VRT on Tuesday night.
Initially, the Flemish premier thought his injury was not very serious and tried to continue his work as normal at the Flemish Parliament on Tuesday afternoon.
"But the ankle kept swelling. Eventually, I went to the AZ [University Hospital] of Jette. My ankle was solidly wrapped in plaster there," he said.
"I am now walking on crutches and am absolutely not allowed to place any weight on my ankle. Fortunately, it is my left ankle, because I always kicked with my right."
