BRUSSELS - If the orange-blue negotiators succeed in finalising the justice chapter for the future coalition agreement today, Flanders is going to have its own minister of justice.

This ensues from the fact that the orange-blue negotiators have agreed to give the provinces and municipalities a greater say in prosecution policy. In the federal judiciary Flanders will then also have a say in which violations of Flemish law should be prosecuted with priority.

If Flanders is granted these powers it will need a minister who is politically responsible for this and who will be given a mandate to have consultations with the federal judiciary. Hence there will be a Belgian minister of justice as well as a Flemish minister of justice. It seems most likely that the one of the Flemish ministers will be given the judiciary powers and will be able to call him or herself minister of justice.
