BRUSSELS – Belgium has one of the least entrepreneurial spirits in the whole of Europe, according to figures out on Tuesday.
The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEB) found of 16 EU countries, in terms of innovation and job creation, Belgium lagged behind neighbours like France, the Netherlands and Germany.
Only Slovenia was less dynamic than Belgium.
The survey showed that in Wallonia 4.7 percent of the population aged 18 to 64 owned or managed a company that was less than 42 months old in 2004 – a figure only a fraction behind the European average of 5 percent.
But Dutch speaking Flanders, often heralded as the powerhouse of Belgian innovation, has just 2.7 percent of its residents running new businesses, which brings the national average down to 3.7 percent and means its performance is falling compared to 2003.
