BRUSSELS — Flemish MPs voted Marleen Vanderpoorten as the new speaker of the Flemish Parliament in Brussels on Wednesday.

Vanderpoorten, a former Flemish education minister, takes over from the outgoing Norbert De Batselier, who has been appointed director of the National Bank of Belgium.

De Batselier, a Socialist SP.A MP, was the Flemish parliamentary speaker for 12 years, presiding over sessions of the Flemish parliament.

Liberal VLD MP Vanderpoorten is the first woman to be appointed as speak of the Flemish parliament, VRT reported.

Government MPs voted in favour of her appointment, while the extreme-right Flemish Interest abstained. Five MPs abstained.
