Brussels - The father of a four-year-old Belgian boy found dead in a river said Sunday he was a suspect in the death of his son, but insisted on his innocence.

Mohamed Jratlou told television station RTL-TVI that police suspected him over the death of Younes Jratlou, whose body was found Tuesday in the Lys river on the Franco-Belgian border some two weeks after he disappeared.

But his father added: "I swear to you I am innocent in the case of my son. It is really affecting me."

The four-year-old went missing on the night of October 25 when he left the family home barefoot and lightly dressed after an argument between his parents, according to prosecutors.

The child was found in the river at Comines about 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) away.
