BRUSSELS – Charleroi seems to once again have grown into a base for violent gangs of thieves. The government wants to avoid a repeat of 2001, which saw a peak in the city's crime rate. To this end it has promised important reinforcements for the local police force.

The visit from the prime minister and his security ministers was announced some time ago. And the announcement on Sunday that the police force in Charleroi would be reinforced with 154 more officers was not a surprise.

Still the measure makes it clear that the federal government is very concerned about the rising crime rate in the city. Prime minister Guy Verhofstadt was accompanied by Home Affairs Minister Patrick Dewael and Justice Minister Laurette Onkelinx in his meetings with local leaders.
