BRUSSELS — The employment inspection raided several road-side restaurant restrooms across the whole country last Thursday, De Morgen writes. Violations were discovered in all of the 31 locations examined.

Employment Minister Peter Vanvelthoven said he was shocked by the results of the inspection which revealed systematic fraud. He is introducing a new draft law at the parliament next month to make the employers more accountable.

The inspection found out that staff employed to take care of the restrooms were all underpaid. Some of them received no more than 2 euros per hour or 450 euros per month for working full time.

Some of the working shifts lasted up to 14 hours and breaks were not allowed. 18 women-workers were illegally registered as being “independent” in order to come around the obligatory social insurance payments.

The 31 restaurants located along the Belgian highways belong to seven different owners. The employers proven to have underpaid their restroom staff will be subject to fines, 9.200 euros per underpaid employee, the Minister said. The new legislation will also make the restaurant owners responsible.

The new law introducing higher employer responsibility for the employees is expected to be passed before the federal elections on 10 June.
