BRUSSELS — Ghent family doctor Marc Cosyns performed on 20 January 2006 euthanasia on an 87-year-old patient suffering from dementia.

The GP performed the mercy killing despite the fact Belgian law bans performing euthanasia on such patients.

Cosyns published his story in the magazine 'De Huisarts' (The Family Doctor) due to current proposals to extend euthanasia laws to dementia sufferers.

The deceased woman, Suzanne Roegiest, had told her husband many years ago she would like to die if she started suffering from dementia, newspaper 'De Morgen' reported on Thursday.

Cosyns also said Roegiest had told him of her wish in a recent moment of clarity and drank unassisted from a cup full of medicines that ended her life.

He therefore claims to have not committed euthanasia in the strict legal sense of the word.

Euthanasia under strict conditions has been legal in Belgium since 2002.
