On a visit to Liege's CEWAC (Wallonian research centre for assembly and material control), the minister of research and technology, Marie Dominique Simonet, presented the development aid budget for the region for the 2007-2014 period.

The package includes EUR 1.1 billion from European subsidies, EUR 1.5 billion from the Walloon region and about EUR 1.5 billion from the private sector.

The aim will be to strengthen the new economic drive originally introduced by the Marshall plan and focus on innovation and training as well as seeking synergies between different Walloon players.

About EUR 1.5 billion of the EUR 2.6 billion raised from public funds will be invested in the Hainaut region while the rest is likely to be awarded to Liege and its surroundings.
