BRUSSELS — Emmah and Noah were the most popular names given to newborn children in Belgium last year, the national statistics office said.
The statistics were based on data held in the national population register, newspaper 'Het Nieuwsblad' reported on Tuesday.
In 2003, the names Emma and Thomas proved to be the most popular, the Economy Ministry's statistics office said.
However, regional variations in the popularity of names were evident.
In Flanders, Emma and Milan were the most popular, while Léa and Noah were most widely used in Wallonia. In Brussels, Sarah and Mohamed were the most popular names.
The number of different forenames continues to increase and there are a greater number of names in circulation for girls than boys.
The 56,064 girls born last year were given 8,548 different forenames, while the 59,325 boys who were born, there were 'just' 7,586 different names used.
Despite the fact there were 5.5 percent fewer girls born, they received 12.7 percent more different names.
